Why Does This Panda Make “Struggling” Faces While Breaking Bamboo? Meet the People-Trained Meng Er

Posted on8 Months ago

Let’s talk about a panda who’s not like the others. His name is Meng Er, and he has one very special habit: every time he breaks bamboo, he shows his teeth like he’s in a kung fu movie. Seriously. It’s his signature move.

Who is Meng Er?

  • Name: Meng Er
  • Gender: Male
  • Birthday: August 22, 2013
  • Birthplace: Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base
  • Now lives at: Beijing Zoo (since October 23, 2014)
  • Twin Brother: Meng Da
  • Half-Siblings: Meng Lan, Meng Bao, Meng Yu
  • Nicknames: Meng Xiaoxiao, Second Son, The Battle Panda
  • Special Features: Hamster-like round face, a pointy head, broken black shoulder strap marking, black "bell" patch on chest, slightly faded eye rings from chronic mite eye
  • Personality: Shy, gentle, calm, loves to eat and nap

What Makes Him So Different?

Most pandas break bamboo calmly and quietly. But not Meng Er. Every time he grabs a piece of bamboo, he gnashes his teeth like he’s about to fight it. Like the bamboo offended him. Like it’s personal.

Other pandas eat bamboo vs. Meng Er eating bamboo — can you spot which one is him? Obvious, right?

Why? Because Meng Er was raised by humans instead of his panda mom. Other panda cubs learn from their mothers. But Meng Er learned everything from zookeepers — and guess what? Humans struggle when breaking bamboo. They show their teeth, grit their jaws, and make faces. Meng Er thought that was the correct technique.

Now, even if the bamboo is soft and easy to break, he still makes the dramatic face. Sometimes he forgets, then pauses to add it in — just to make sure he did it right. This has become his most famous habit, and it’s one of the reasons why people around the world love him.

Meng Er forgot to flash his signature toothy grin while cracking bamboo — realized halfway and quickly made up for it!

He’s Cute, Funny, and Also... a Fighter

Don’t be fooled by his sweet face. Meng Er once got into a surprise fight with Gu Gu, a 20-year-old panda known for being fierce. The zoo door broke, and Meng Er accidentally wandered into Gu Gu’s territory. Most pandas would run. Meng Er stayed and fought. He was only 5 years old, but brave enough to scratch Gu Gu’s nose. That’s when he earned his nickname: The Battle Panda of House Meng.

A Soft Son with a Big Heart

Even though his mom, Meng Meng, didn’t raise him, Meng Er has always cared deeply for her. When she returned to the zoo, he recognized her instantly and stood up to watch her. But she barked at him — probably didn’t remember him. Still, he didn’t get upset. He just stared at her quietly. In summer, he even volunteered to go outside so she could enjoy the cool indoor space. That’s love.

The Struggle Behind the Smile

Meng Er has had “mite eye” since he was a baby. It’s a condition caused by mites, bacteria, or fungus, and it made the area around his eyes look pale. His keepers tried many treatments, and Meng Er has been very cooperative — even when medicine tasted bad. When he was little, he didn’t even know how to peel bamboo properly. He would get frustrated and just eat it with the skin on. But he learned. He always learns.

That’s why, even today, he still gnashes his teeth when breaking bamboo. Because he’s doing his best — just like the keepers taught him.

The Human Inside the Panda Suit? It’s Probably Meng Er

Okay, we need to talk about something very serious.

At this point, we’re not totally sure Meng Er is a real panda. Because no wild animal should know how to:

  • Hang up his bamboo mat to air-dry
  • Neatly fold it like a hotel towel
  • Lay it out perfectly and nap on it like he’s on vacation
  • Tuck himself in with a blanket
  • Wipe his mouth with his blanket after eating bamboo
  • And learn to fold his blanket into a perfect little square — like a soldier making his bed

Excuse me, sir. Are you a panda or a retired soldier disguised in fluff?

This is not normal panda behavior. This is what we call “People’s Education Edition Panda” — a panda raised by humans, who learned all his life skills from zookeeper dads.

While other pandas were being pandas, Meng Er was out here taking notes:

“Ah, so after bamboo, we fold the blanket… got it. And a gentle mouth dab. Excellent.”

Seriously, someone give this panda a certificate in Advanced Panda Housekeeping.

Final Thoughts: Meng Er Is All of Us

He tries hard. He learns the hard way. He does things out of order but still makes sure to go back and finish the steps. He’s a fighter, a softie, a little awkward, and very real.

And that’s why we love him.

Because in a world full of perfect pandas, Meng Er is the one who shows his teeth and says, “I’m doing my best!”

And honestly... same.
